ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay)
ELISA has been used globally for the detection of various antibodies and antigens. This procedure is very simple and also as sensitive as radioimmunoassay. In ELISA, only a small quantity of test reagent is required and in this, the enzyme is used instead of fluorescent dye. ELISA can be used for the detection of antigen and antibody.
Uses of ELISA
ELISA is used for detection of a variety of antigens and antibodies of various microorganisms. Some of the examples are
- Detection of HIV antibodies in serum
- Detection of mycobacterial antibodies in tuberculosis
- Detection of rotavirus in faeces
- Detection of hepatitis B markers in serum
- Detection of enterotoxin of Escherichia Coli in faeces
What does ELISA Stand For
Elisa stands for Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay. ELISA is of three types
- Sandwich ELISA
- Indirect ELISA
- Competitive ELISA
