Normal Shape and Size of Teeth

The normal shape and size could vary according to the jaw sizes but generally, the teeth size can be judged by observing the teeth. When your mouth is open half inch than 1 to 5 mm of front teeth must be seen. If your teeth are not visible than your teeth might be smaller in size then the normal.

This could be of various types and due to various reasons.

What are various Types of Small Teeth (Microdontia)

The small tooth could be of two types generalised and localised

Generalised Microdontia

The generalised microdontia is said when almost all the teeth are of small size. It could be subdivided as

True Generalised

When all the teeth are of small size, this condition is very rare and occurs in lack of growth hormone.

Relative Generalised

Actually, all the teeth are normal in size but they appear to be small due to the large jaw size.

Localised Microdontia

The localised microdontia occurs when only a few teeth are smaller than the other teeth. Most common in this is the maxillary lateral incisors which are also called peg shaped laterals (Peg Teeth). These are shaped as an inverted cone and have short root. Localised microdontia is far more common than the generalised microdontia.

Causes of Small Teeth (Microdontia)

There could be various causes/factors responsible for the small teeth in adults.
